our team

So, who is team scope anyway? we’re a motley crew of brilliant (and slightly crazy) designers who have come from all corners of the globe to work together – and we absolutely love it. here’s a little bit about us to get you started, but if you want to know more, just give us a call!
Katie Young

Katie Young / Director

Katie has spent the last decade making sure her clients make a great first impression; and second; and third. With an advanced diploma in graphic design and advertising, a dozen years’ experience, and her own designer wrapping paper range – Gifted – she really knows how to make an impact.

In 2003, Katie created one of her best pieces of work yet – Scope Design Group. Along with her team of creative and design gurus, she works with leading Australian companies, creating cut-through communication and design solutions. Although she thrives in the challenging environment of achieving perfection for national corporations, she gets a buzz out of making creative solutions a reality for small businesses too.

But don’t get the impression that Katie is one of those reclusive design types – she loves all kinds of challenges, and as a self-confessed ‘rev-head’ loves nothing more than jumping in the navigator’s seat and belting around a rally course. Her experience, quirky sense of humour and willingness to take risks are the perfect combination that make her the driving force behind team scope.

Lee Valentine

Lee Valentine / Brand Strategist

With a name like Lee Valentine he could have been a 1950s pop heartthrob, but lucky for us he decided to become a branding guru instead. To put it simply, when they’re looking for someone with hard-hitting credentials to build or renew killer brands, Lee’s the guy they call.

Lee’s been doing this for 18 years, so he knows a thing or two about how it all works. And his expertise has seen him transform the bottom line of some major clients. If you read his CV (which we have), you’ll see that in the past 18 years he’s:

• built an award-winning design agency
• managed the marketing division of Australia’s largest
   independent real estate agency

• become a lecturing authority on marketing and
  brand strategy
• mobilised a number of business units into
  multimillion-dollar profit centres

• launched hundreds of online and offline brand and
  marketing strategies.

On top of all that, Lee is a happily married guy with four gorgeous kids (baby Maxx is the brand-new addition to the Valentine clan), and while his passion for photography has filled the family albums, it’s landscapes that he’s really inspired by … probably because you don’t have to chase landscapes around waiting for them to sit still long enough to snap a picture! His goal this year is to get his hands on a BMW R1200 GS enduro bike and head out into the wild blue yonder taking pics of amazing things. Cool.

Mark Burrough

mark burrough / senior designer

If you were to see Mark indulging his other passion on the weekends – surfing – you’d be grateful that he’s a far better designer than he is surfer. But for a boy recently in from the UK, he does okay on a long board.

Mark has more than ten years’ experience in corporate publishing and branding. Armed with an honours degree in design, he worked for several of the best London-based agencies while earning a diploma in interior design in his spare time.

He made the move from London to Sydney in 2006, bringing a swag of prestigious design awards with him – including the coveted IVCA Clarion Award – but thankfully leaving the weather back in Ol’ Blighty. After several months searching for the ideal agency, he found his way to team scope where he has since been creating design solutions for grateful Australian clients.

Christine Kelly

christine kelly / designer

Always artistic, Christine flirted with the fine arts for a while before studying design fundamentals at Enmore Design Centre. She went on to complete her diploma in graphic design. Since then, she’s worked in a range of businesses across the design industry, gaining a wealth of knowledge and experience.

After doing everything from designing top magazines to in-house design for a renowned media company (we’d love to tell you which one, but we can’t!) to taking a key role in the Sydney Symphony account at Moon Design branding studio, Christine’s an old hand at dealing with high-pressure situations that need innovative solutions – so we’re confident that she’ll be able to handle anything we can throw at her!

With her self-confessed love of typography, her passion for books is only natural, and she freely admits to reading anything from epic sagas to the back of the Cornflakes packet. But her guiltiest pleasure of all is working behind the scenes of written material, painstakingly putting the pieces of the typography puzzle together until they perfectly compliment all other elements of the design.

An avid traveller, she hates to be tied down to set plans, preferring to explore and see where fate takes her. But being a true-blue Aussie girl, she loves her sand and surf, so if you ever want to find her outside of the studio, the best place to start is the nearest beach!

our extended team

We know it takes a broad range of strategy, design and communication expertise to bring your brand and communications to life, so we’ve gone out and found some of the best in the business and made them part of our team. It’s team scope Plus! We’ve all been working together for ages, so from your point of view it’s a seamless process that delivers everything you need to look the part, sound the part and deliver results. Wanna meet the team?

scott sugden / spatial intelligence

Designers and website creators have traditionally battled over the form and function of websites. Spatial are that rare breed of web developers who have exceptional technical ability plus a love of good design and an understanding of brand. They build websites that look cool, are highly functional and easy to use. Isn’t that exactly what you’ve been looking for?

“team scope understands online design. They recognise the technical possibilities and limitations, but aren’t afraid to push the boundaries. Together we create sites that are great to look at and highly functional. We’ve built many websites together over the years and in the process refined our project management approach so that it’s all pretty seamless for clients.”

kerrin medenyak / ink communications

If you want people to hear your message you have to give your brand a voice. The way you look and the words you use must work together to create powerful communications. Ink takes the angst out of putting pen to paper as they work with you to create ‘stop-em-in-their-tracks’ copy for everything from sales proposals and marketing materials, to brochures, websites and annual reports. They’re experts at putting the right words together to create the results you want – every time.

“For many designers, words just get in the way of a good design, but team scope is different. They’re all about creating communications that work, so words, images, design and tone are all considered from the outset. The result for clients? Messages that cut through and big personality brands whose voice and visual tell the same story.”

zoe palmer / brand chemistry

Whether you’re just starting out or planning to rebrand, Brand Chemistry is all about helping you uncover the magic behind your brand. The key is in the strategy and analytical elements that lead to killer creative – and it’s something that they are quite simply brilliant at. Once you’ve created your brand, they’re also there to help with the other side of the branding process – systemising your marketing activities and working on ways to drive new business.

“team scope is brilliant at finding the right creative angle to communicate a brand strategy, without being so cool or clever that the meaning is lost. They pay meticulous attention to every detail and have top-notch project management skills. They not only know what they need to do to bring a project to completion, they know what everyone else in the process needs to do too, and they make sure it all happens on time and on budget. When I work with team scope I have total confidence that their expertise will translate into superior added value for our clients.”
